Where Hope Finds a Home

At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, every life tells a story—of resilience, heartbreak, and second chances. Some stories begin in auction pens, kill lots, or abandoned pastures, where frightened horses await an uncertain fate. Others start on the cold concrete floors of overcrowded animal shelters, where dogs wonder if they will ever feel the warmth of a loving touch again. And some of the most painful stories come from women escaping trauma, abuse, and hardship, searching for a place where they can begin to heal.

Here, on the open fields of Central California, we rewrite those stories with compassion, purpose, and hope.

Founded in 2022 by Wendy McGrath, Crossroads Rescue Ranch was born out of the realization that both animals and people suffer in silence, and both deserve a chance at renewal. Wendy grew up on a family ranch, where the rhythm of hooves and the gentle presence of horses shaped her understanding of life, healing, and connection. When she witnessed horses being neglected, abandoned, or sold to uncertain fates, she felt the pull to intervene. But it wasn’t just the horses. Wendy saw that the struggles of the animals mirrored the struggles of women she had met—women with stories of survival, resilience, and strength who, like the horses, just needed someone to believe in them.

That’s why Crossroads Rescue Ranch was created: to be a sanctuary for healing, where humans and animals could help each other rediscover trust and rebuild their futures. What began as a dream has grown into a mission that now serves the entire state of California and continues to build partnerships in surrounding areas.

When a horse arrives at Crossroads, they often carry the weight of abandonment, abuse, and neglect. Some have suffered from malnutrition, untreated injuries, or emotional trauma from years of mistreatment. Through veterinary care, proper nutrition, and behavioral rehabilitation, we work patiently to restore their health and spirit. These horses don’t just recover—they thrive. But their healing doesn’t happen in isolation.

Women who have experienced trauma, domestic violence, or life-altering challenges come to the ranch seeking solace and a path forward. For many, the gentle, non-judgmental nature of horses provides the emotional support they need to begin their own healing journey. As they care for, groom, and work alongside the horses, they regain confidence, trust, and a sense of purpose. The bond that forms between human and horse becomes a bridge—one that helps both move beyond their pain and toward growth.

In 2024, we expanded our mission to include canine rescue and rehabilitation, partnering with the McFarland Police Department’s Animal Control division. The need was undeniable—390,000 dogs are euthanized each year in shelters across the U.S., many of them healthy and adoptable. These dogs, much like the horses we save, come from difficult pasts. Some have been surrendered due to financial hardship, others have been abandoned or rescued from neglect and abuse. Through medical care, socialization, and training, we help these dogs heal and prepare them for loving homes.

But the impact of this expansion goes beyond rescuing dogs. Just as horses provide emotional support for women, our rescued dogs also play an important role in the healing process through companionship and trust-building activities. For women who may struggle to form connections after trauma, a dog’s unconditional love and loyalty can be transformative, helping them learn how to trust again and build healthier relationships.

At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, every animal we save and every person we help is part of a larger mission: to address the interconnected challenges of animal welfare and human vulnerability. The statistics that drive our work are sobering—20,000 American horses are transported annually to slaughter, 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized each year, and over 1 in 3 women in the U.S. have experienced domestic violence. But we believe that these numbers are not permanent, and through dedication, education, and action, we can change them.

Through our Youth & Community Education Programs, we are fostering the next generation of advocates who will continue this mission. By teaching children and young adults about responsible pet ownership, proper animal care, and the importance of rescue and rehabilitation, we are planting the seeds of empathy, compassion, and responsibility. These programs don’t just benefit animals—they instill valuable life skills and a sense of purpose in the youth who participate, ensuring that the legacy of Crossroads Rescue Ranch will continue for generations to come.

Everything we do is made possible by the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners. 100% of funds raised go directly toward the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of animals in need and providing a safe, nurturing space for women seeking a second chance. Whether it’s through feeding and medical care or therapy programs and rehoming efforts, every dollar and every act of kindness brings us one step closer to a world where no horse is sent to slaughter, no dog is abandoned, and no woman is left without hope.

As we grow, we continue to believe in the power of second chances and the profound impact of compassion. At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, we don’t just rescue animals—we rescue souls. We don’t just heal wounds—we heal hearts. And we don’t just offer new beginnings—we offer the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

How We Got Our Start

Wendy was born and raised on her grandfather’s ranch, where she developed a deep love and respect for horses. Growing up surrounded by working equines, she witnessed firsthand the heartbreak of seeing these magnificent animals auctioned off or abandoned by ranchers who could no longer care for them. Determined to make a difference, Wendy founded Crossroads Rescue Ranch (CRR) in mid-2022 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Central California, dedicated to ending the abuse, neglect, and slaughter of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, and burros through rescue and rehabilitation.

Though her grandfather has passed, the ranch remains a lasting legacy—a place where future generations can experience the beauty and tranquility of the outdoors. Wendy has committed part of the family’s land to CRR, ensuring a safe haven for rescued equines. While currently operating on borrowed land, CRR is actively working toward relocating to its own permanent facility in 2024, where it will expand its capacity to take in more rescues and provide retirement for aging equines.

At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, 100% of funds raised go directly toward the rescue, care, healing, and rehabilitation of horses in need, as well as providing a safe space for women seeking a second chance. CRR is dedicated to restoring trust in humankind, offering equines a future filled with love, dignity, and purpose. Beyond rescue efforts, the organization focuses on equine-assisted programs that educate, inspire, and support youth and families. Through advocacy, education, and direct intervention, CRR strives to raise public awareness about proper equine care and ensure a future where no horse is left behind.
